Abstract

This study aimed to examine whether sleep quality and sleep duration significantly predict emotional reactivity in adolescents.

Methods and Materials:

A correlational descriptive design was used, involving 510 adolescents aged 13–18 from various secondary schools across India. Participants completed validated self-report instruments measuring emotional reactivity, sleep quality (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index), and sleep duration (Sleep Habits Survey). Data were analyzed using SPSS-27. Pearson correlation was used to assess relationships between variables, and a standard multiple linear regression analysis was conducted to determine the predictive power of sleep quality and sleep duration on emotional reactivity. Assumptions of normality, linearity, homoscedasticity, and multicollinearity were verified prior to analysis. Pearson correlation results indicated that emotional reactivity was significantly correlated with both sleep quality (r = .48, p < .01) and sleep duration (r = –.37, p < .01). Multiple regression analysis showed that the overall model was statistically significant, F(2, 507) = 102.34, p < .001, with an R² of .29. Sleep quality emerged as a significant positive predictor of emotional reactivity (β = .39, t = 8.16, p < .001), and sleep duration was a significant negative predictor (β = –.28, t = –5.16, p < .001). Together, the predictors accounted for 29% of the variance in emotional reactivity scores. The findings underscore the significant role of sleep-related factors in adolescent emotional functioning. Poor sleep quality and shorter sleep duration are both associated with heightened emotional reactivity, with sleep quality demonstrating a slightly stronger influence. These results highlight the importance of promoting healthy sleep behaviors as part of emotional regulation strategies in adolescents, particularly within educational and clinical settings.
