Abstract

This study aimed to examine the mediating role of self-efficacy in the relationship between sedentary lifestyle and psychological well-being among Indonesian adults. A descriptive correlational study was conducted with a sample of 415 participants selected based on Morgan and Krejcie’s table. Participants completed three standardized instruments: the Ryff Psychological Well-Being Scales, the General Self-Efficacy Scale, and the International Physical Activity Questionnaire–Short Form (IPAQ-SF) to assess sedentary behavior. Descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation analysis, and Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) were performed using SPSS version 27 and AMOS version 21 to evaluate the direct, indirect, and total relationships among variables and to test model fit. The results showed significant negative correlations between sedentary lifestyle and both self-efficacy (r = -0.37, p < .001) and psychological well-being (r = -0.42, p < .001), while self-efficacy was positively correlated with psychological well-being (r = 0.58, p < .001). SEM revealed that sedentary lifestyle negatively predicted self-efficacy (β = -0.37, p < .001) and psychological well-being (β = -0.31, p < .001), and that self-efficacy positively predicted psychological well-being (β = 0.51, p < .001). The indirect effect of sedentary lifestyle on psychological well-being via self-efficacy was also significant (β = -0.19, p < .001), confirming the mediating role of self-efficacy. The model demonstrated good fit (χ²/df = 2.35, CFI = 0.97, RMSEA = 0.057). The findings support that self-efficacy partially mediates the negative relationship between sedentary lifestyle and psychological well-being. Enhancing self-efficacy may serve as a valuable strategy in mitigating the psychological harms associated with sedentary behavior, particularly in health promotion and mental wellness interventions.
