Workplace Conflict and Lack of Purpose as Predictors of Depression in Corporate Employees

Abstract

This study aimed to examine the predictive roles of workplace conflict and lack of purpose in relation to depression among corporate employees in Armenia. A correlational descriptive design was employed, involving a sample of 391 corporate employees selected based on Krejcie and Morgan’s sample size determination table. Participants completed standardized instruments including the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II), the Interpersonal Conflict at Work Scale (ICAWS), and the Purpose in Life Test (PIL). Data were analyzed using SPSS-27 software. Pearson correlation coefficients were computed to assess the relationships between depression and the two independent variables. Multiple linear regression analysis was conducted to evaluate the predictive value of workplace conflict and lack of purpose on depression scores. Pearson correlation results indicated significant positive associations between depression and both workplace conflict (r = .51, p < .001) and lack of purpose (r = .57, p < .001). The multiple linear regression model was statistically significant, F(2, 388) = 135.27, p < .001, and accounted for 41% of the variance in depression (R² = .41). Both workplace conflict (β = .34, t = 8.05, p < .001) and lack of purpose (β = .41, t = 9.52, p < .001) emerged as significant predictors of depression. The findings highlight that both workplace conflict and lack of purpose significantly contribute to depressive symptoms in corporate employees. These results underscore the importance of fostering supportive interpersonal dynamics and enhancing meaningful engagement within professional roles to protect employee mental health.
